There are so many great places in Richmond to not only pick the perfect pumpkin, but also enjoy many other fun fall activites! The list below details all farms within about an hour of downtown Richmond, roughly in order of distance from center or Richmond and in which direction, to give you an idea of how far you’d travel to each. Plus there are details on what each location has to offer this fall, costs, and any other important information. Happy Halloween month Richmond!

 

 

Gallmeyer Farms – The Pumpkin Patch (~6 miles East of Downtown Richmond)

As the summer vegetable growing season winds down, Gallmeyer farm gears up for The Pumpkin Patch, where they offer a popular low-key “on the farm” family experience. Admission is free and includes quite a few fall activities: hayrides, spooky house tours, the straw bale maze, and the romping pile. And pumpkins! Growing right in the fields are jack-o-lantern pumpkins for your pick-your-own pleasure, ranging in size from between 1 and 100+ pounds. Other popular fall offerings: pie pumpkins, winter squash, Indian corn, straw bales, corn shocks and gourds of many shapes, sizes and colors.

Cross Creek Nursery (~13 miles SouthWest of Downtown Richmond)

This farm is a family business has served the Richmond area for over 4 decades, and  is one of my favorites for pumpkin picking and fall fun in October! Every Saturday and Sunday starting the first weekend in October, from 11am to 4pm there’s a Fall Festival, which includes hay rides ($4), pumpkin decorating ($5), goats, a bouncy house, pumpkin ring toss, and of course, opportunity to purchase a pumpkin of your choice (pay per pound). Admission is free, so if you want to stop by and just check things out, take a few pictures, then it will cost you exactly zero dollars. I found this especially helpful when my daughter was little because if she fell asleep in the car or started to expire quickly, we could pack up and go home any time.

Windy Knoll Farm (~15 miles North of Downtown Richmond)

A family owned farm that has been serving Richmond for over 20 years, with many of the staff having been there for at least that long too. This farm is also open multiple seasons a year for blueberry picking in the spring and Christmas tree sales near holiday time. A lot of care goes into the planting and care of the pumpkins here. There is no charge for admission and you get a hay ride out to the pumpkin patch to pick your favorite. Pumpkins are available for purchase, cost depending on weight, as well as various gourds.

Hanover Vegetable Farm (~17 miles North, slightly West, of Downtown Richmond)

Possibly one of the most popular pumpkin patch farms in Richmond, this place is open 7 days a week, with pumkin patch picking starting on September 28th. During the week the farm is open for pumpkin picking only from 2pm – 6pm, with hay rides out to the field and pumpkins available for purchase at $0.59/pound. The weekends have a lot more excitement going on: admission is $10 and includes a hay ride out to the pumpkin patch, pumpkin of your choice, plus access to the bouncy house, petting barn (feed is $1), corn maze, pallet maze, Charlotte’s web hide and seek, sand pit, corn pits, giant tether ball, face painting (extra $), and new this year is a corn cannon (extra $)! Plus there are 2 festivals in the month of October – Gourds, Goblets and Ghouls Festival on October 12th and 13th and the End of Season Bash on October 26th and 27th.

Boulevard Flower Gardens (~18 miles South of Downtown Richmond)

Pumpkins, gourds, corn stalks and straw bales are available for purchase daily from the garden center, but the fall activities are only on weekends. Admission is free for fall activities, and includes access to the straw maze, corn pit, and playgrounds. For additional costs, there are also pony rides, face painting, barrel train rides, pumpkin decorating, and toddler bounce. There’s also food available including hot dogs, BBQ sandwiches, nachos, pickle on a stick, warm pretzels, kettle corn and cold drinks on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 3:30pm.

Swift Creek Berry Farm (~20 miles SouthWest of Downtown Richmond)

This family owned farm is also open year round for other produce picking, but have some fun and exciting activities for pumpkin picking. They have a variety of gourds, pie pumpkins, ugly knotty pumpkins and carving pumpkins. There is no entrance fee and they offer a variety of field games, a straw maze, pumpkin painting and a fire pit for everyone to enjoy! There are also a bunch of picnic tables, so you can bring your own food and make a day of it.

Lloyd Family Farms (~26 miles NorthWest of Downtown Richmond)

Lloyd Family Farms Pumpkin Patch offers hours of family fun. Admission includes hay rides around the farm, a corn maze , barnyard friends meet and greet, a corn crib for the kids to play in, and a 50+ acre pumpkin patch. Plus they have added a Pipe Slide, Straw Castle, Tractor Tricycle Track, Yard Games, Kiddo Corner, Sand Mountain, a giant Pinball Field, and a Fire Garden (s’mores available for purchase in the barn). Admission is $10 per person (Children 2 and under are free) and pumpkins are available for purchase, priced by the pound ($0.79/lb).

Ashland Berry Farm (~27 miles North of Downtown Richmond)

This farm is open year round, with multiple options for picking your own produce, but of course Fall is pumpkin picking time! The pumpkin patch opens September 28th and is open on weekends only until October 8th, where the pumpkin patch is open 7 days a week until October 31st. Parking and hay rides are free, then pumpkins can be purchased either by the pound, OR you can pay $20 to take as many as you can carry! There are a ton of fun activities for kids, all available with the Unlimited Fun Pass for $10 and includes the 3D Boo House, Animal Coral, and Fort Pumpkin Adventure with massive inflatable mazes. You can also pay individually for the 3D Boo House ($3) and Fort Pumpkin Adventure ($7). There are also fresh donuts, hot dogs, corn dogs, and fresh french fries available on the weekends!

Autumn Harvest Acres (~40 miles South of Downtown Richmond)

There is a $10 admission fee, which includes a ton of fun stuff: Hay Rides, Cornfield Walk, Farm Petting Area, Corn Box, Children’s Play Area, Face Painting, Corn Hole Boards, 1 Barrel Train Ride, 1 Jump Pillow Admission. For an extra $5 admission, you can have unlimited barrel train rides and pillow jump rides too! There are pumpkins available for purchase too. Also, on Friday and Saturday nights, there’s the Haunted Hayride and House of Horror for adults and older children, which goes from 7pm to 11pm.

This pumpkin patch is seasonal and maintained by a local family owned farm. Admission is free and includes hayride through the pumpkin patch, a cornfield maze, bean bag toss, ring toss and other games. Your family can pick their own pumpkin from our patch or choose from our large selection in the yard, which is great if you have smaller kids. There are also gourds, squash, crafts and fall decorations available for sale. A handful of picnic tables are also available in case you want to bring lunch and eat there!

Holly Fork Farm (~42 miles East of Downtown Richmond)

This farm is open year round, with fun stuff for every season. The fall pumpkin season starts on September 21st and goes until October 31st, open daily except September 23, 24, and 30. .They have so many amazing things for sale! There are pumpkins, chrysanthemums, fall squashes, gourds, sweet potatoes, corn stalks, straw bales, jams, jellies, relishes, and seasonal decorations. There are also animals, a straw toss, corn sensory boxes, a hay ride and pumpkin patch of course. Plus there’s a Hoedown the 3rd Saturday in October (the 19th) that costs $2 admission and has a ton of fun things to do including face painting, glitter tattoos, square dancing demo, bluegrass music, and tons of food and other vendors.
